William Clark (Bill) Nelson passed away peacefully at Wheeling Hospital on May 22, 2010.
Bill was born and raised in Parkersburg as the son of A.L. and Mary C. Nelson where he graduated from Parkersburg High School and Mountain State Business College.
During World War II, Bill proudly served in the Army Air Corps where he earned a pilot's license and gained a love of flying. After the war, he returned to Parkersburg to work with his father in the family business, Nelson Awning Company and Nelson Heating and Plumbing.
Bill was a lifelong, loyal member of First United Methodist Church where he served at many levels over the years and was often found ushering on Sunday mornings. He was also active in the community in many areas: Board of Directors of the American Automobile Association, Lions Club, Elks Club, Meals on Wheels and the Archaeological Society.
Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lee Willingham Nelson; two daughters, Kathleen Corbitt (Ed) and Mary Hall (Bud); two grandchildren, Mark Corbitt (Joyce) and Amy McCarthy (Marcus); and three great-grandchildren, Randall Corbitt, Abbagail McCarthy and Michael Scaglione. He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Van Nest of Ohio and Jean Graham of Texas, as well as special nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Leavitt Funeral Home from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday followed by a celebration of Bill's life at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.
The family requests a memorial donation be made to First United Methodist Church, 1001 Juliana St., Parkersburg, WV 26101.
